FROM THE EDITOR:
Hey everyone, welcome to the very first Friday Halt. This is a quick stop at the end of your week where we take one idea, break it down fast, and head into the weekend with something useful to think about. Thanks for being here, and let’s jump right in.
What the Research Really Shows About Veterans at Work
There is a stubborn belief out there that veterans struggle more than civilians when they move into regular workplaces. The data tells a different story. A major peer-reviewed study of 500 federal employees found that military experience did not negatively impact job satisfaction, performance, organizational fit, stress, or turnover intentions. Veterans and non-veterans performed the same across every category. That means many of the old assumptions are wrong.
As a Navy veteran who retired after twenty years of service, I have lived this transition myself. Leaving the military felt like stepping into a different world, and even now, more than twelve years after retiring, I still notice the differences at times. The research backs up what many of us experience. Veterans walk into civilian workplaces with real skills that matter.
The strongest predictors of satisfaction and performance were simple things like age, experience, and overall job fit. Not military service. Veterans are not harder to manage. They are not more stressed. They are not more likely to quit. They adjusted well, participated fully, and showed no negative effects tied to their military background. Employers who hesitate because they expect difficulty transitioning are reacting to misconceptions, not reality.
This matters for Blair County and for any organization trying to build a strong team. Veterans bring strong teamwork skills, clear communication, leadership under pressure, and attention to detail. They know how to follow through, stay steady when things get busy, and keep the mission in focus. These strengths do carry over, and they improve the workplaces that know how to use them.
Quick Message to Employers
If you are an employer, here is the bottom line. The research shows that veterans perform just as well as non-veterans in civilian roles. There’s no extra risk, no adjustment gap, and no hidden performance issues. Veterans bring structure, teamwork, calm under pressure, and a strong sense of responsibility. Hire for character, train for skill, and veterans will outperform both.
And to My Fellow Veterans,
Your service is not a barrier. Not only does the data show, but you prove every day that you compete on equal ground in civilian workplaces. Your time in uniform taught you discipline, adaptability, communication, and confidence. Those skills matter here. You’re not behind and you bring real value leading to success in this next chapter.
